NEW YORK, N.Y. — With the number of tourists traveling to Africa from the USA on the rise, the Africa Travel Association (ATA) announced today that it will host the fifth annual U.S.-Africa Travel & Tourism Industry Seminar in Washington, D.C. on Friday, March 16, 2012. The conference will be a one-day stand alone kick-off event immediately preceding the Travel & Adventure consumer expo, being held March 17–18, 2012 at the Washington D.C. Convention Center.

State of Tourism in Africa Report Reveals 2010 Strong Year for Tourist Arrivals to Africa
New York, N.Y., September 27, 2011 – African and global tourism leaders gathered at New York University last Tuesday, September 20, 2011 to discuss the need to raise the profile of travel and tourism on Africa’s political and economic agendas and to establish networks of collaboration to raise Africa’s tourism profile on the global tourism stage.
The event was organized by the Africa Travel Association (ATA) and hosted by New York University’s Africa House as world leaders gathered in New York City for the United Nations General Assembly meetings. Nearly 200 people attended ATA’s signature U.S. event, including representatives from the travel and tourism industry, the diplomatic community, NYU, the non-profit sector, and the media.

Young and Seasoned Professionals and Students Gathered at New York University to Discuss the Significance of Tourism for Recovery During Turbulent Times
New York, NY, September 23, 2011 – The Africa Travel Association’s Young Professionals Program (YPP) hosted a successful Africa Tourism Roundtable, with the theme Resilient Africa: Managing Tourism in Turbulent Times, at New York University on Tuesday, September 20, 2011, preceding ATA’s Sixth Annual Presidential Forum on Tourism. The event was co-hosted by New York University’s Graduate Hospitality and Tourism Society (HTS) of the Preston Robert Tisch Center for Hospitality, Tourism, and Sports Management.
With over eighty young and seasoned professionals, students, and faculty in attendance, individuals from varied backgrounds came together over a common interest—the role travel and tourism play in Africa’s economic development. A panel of six distinguished guests shared experiences their countries or industries have faced to demonstrate the resiliency of Africa and the significance of tourism in economic recovery and growth. Speakers shared their expertise with young professionals and students, and stressed the power of the youth on the future of the African tourism industry.

Preliminary Findings Reveal Visitor Arrivals to Africa Continue to Grow at Higher Rate than Overall Arrivals Worldwide
Dakar, Senegal, May 25, 2011 – The Africa Travel Association today announced the forthcoming release of the second edition of The State of Tourism in Africa, prepared by Africa House-New York University, the World Bank and ATA. The report, which uses facts, figures and stories to show the potential and impact of tourism across Africa, will be officially released at ATA’s upcoming Presidential Forum on Africa Tourism in the third week of September, parallel to the meetings of the United Nations General Assembly.
Citing UNWTO data, among other international sources such as WTTC, China Tourism Academy, World Economic Forum, Expedia, Inc., the report presents the preliminary finding that Africa’s tourism arrivals grew from 37 million in 2003 to 63 million in 2010 and that arrivals to Africa continued to grow at a higher rate than overall arrivals in the world in 2010. In addition, according to China Tourism Academy, Africa received 730,000 visitors from China in 2010, making it the smallest, but fastest growing continental destination with a growth rate of 90% in comparison to 2009.

Destination Zimbabwe is Open for Business
New York, NEW YORK, July 29, 2011 – The Africa Travel Association (ATA) announced today that the Republic of Zimbabwe has once again joined the travel trade association as a member country. ATA and Zimbabwe trace their roots back to 1988, when ATA’s annual world congress was held in the capital city of Harare.
With an improving economy, Zimbabwe is once again hoping to partner with ATA to increase the number of international tourism arrivals in the country.
